Is a swim spa cheaper than a pool?

Up front, a swim spa is almost always less expensive than an in-ground pool. Installed swim spa projects typically land between $25,000 and $50,000, while in-ground pools commonly start around $50,000 and climb quickly with decking, fencing, and landscaping.

Where the comparison gets closer:

• Above-ground pools are far cheaper to buy, but they do not heat efficiently and are seasonal in most climates.
• Operating cost favors the pool in summer and the swim spa in winter. A swim spa holds a much smaller volume of water and is insulated, so heating it year-round is realistic; heating a pool year-round usually is not.
• Footprint matters. A swim spa fits in a yard that cannot accommodate a pool at all.

If you want a swimmable body of water you will use in December, a swim spa is the cheaper path. If you want open water for a family in July, a pool gives more room per dollar.
